The Boomers Adventures in Technology

Boomer's Learning to maneuver through using current technology

An IT specialist was asked by our church, Cathedral of Faith COGIC, to serve as a computer training instructor for a volunteer program at a senior citizen’s residence home in the mid-city as a part of the Women's Mission Auxiliary Group. This would be an outreach sponsored by that group as an extension of their community program. I serve as her assistant and together we are helping other mature adults to become familiar with using computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Session IX-We Are Growing!! Using MS Word Documents

We are attracting more students. Our number has increased to six regular ladies.  The men pass by to talk but feel they know everything about computers and don’t need a class.  We have outgrown our current classroom and its facilities so the new computers and a larger space for class is solely needed. Another issue is the lack of up-to-date virus definitions and virus protection. For the last two sessions we have had to trouble shoot problems with the in-house computers before we can even begin class.
The residents are free to use the computers for personal use and often they jam up the computers to the point we have no internet access. Talked with the Manager of the Residence Housing to see if we would have a better site for class soon, especially after we get more laptops. She informed us that there was a larger space that we could use located across from our current site.  More room to spread out and set up the laptops and it could accommodate up to 10-15 students.
 The next two sessions are dedicated understanding and using Microsoft Word Documents. Activities were done to familiarize the class with the Word Document Ribbon and what items are found there. Several fun activities where done to help students understand what is found along the ribbon and how each item is used. They were ready to start making signs and flier since they are a socially active group.  Sign making really excited them. We started making signs for future events including adding fancy borders.

Session XIII - Ready to Add Proper Keyboarding

The beauty of working with this age group is the students really want to learn and are so committed to doing the exercises and practicing the techniques it is a pleasure to work with them. When we first started the program the ladies did not know what to expect but when we arrived with portable whiteboard, projector and two extra usable laptops they knew we were serious.  They had teachers before but they didn’t stay and where not committed to helping them learn to use the computers.  Since our arrival they feel confident that we will be around for the long haul and that we are serious about them learning how to use the computers.
At this point more ladies are coming on a consistent basis and they want to add keyboarding classes to their computer literacy component.  We agree since the instructor and I have discussed their lack of keyboarding skill that would make them more effective users of the laptops. We purchased a Mavis Beacon Beginning Keyboarding CD and we’re going to install it on all of the computers so that they can begin to learn how to keyboard. They were very excited about the prospect because they know their dexterity is lacking and many have no prior knowledge on how to keyboard.

We have upgraded the virus definitions and virus protection and installed a newer OS (Windows 10) which will make teaching them better because it will be the updated operating system.  We are still waiting to purchase our additional laptops but we know it will be soon.

Session XII – Understanding Dot endings to internet addresses

This class was dedicated to helping our students understand the dot endings to internet addresses and what they tell us and why they are important. It was important for the students to clearly understand what they endings represent and how they give vital information while on the internet.
After last session’s bout with understanding ISP’s they were really ready to get a clear understanding about the dot endings and what they mean. This was a very exciting class because they really got into understanding each dot ending and where you would find examples in a web address.

.com  =  commerical (retail)
 .net = network
 .org = organization (non-profit)
 .gov = government
 .cc =  CC domains could be a perfect choice for websites representing commercial companies, church communities, consulting companies

Www = world wide web  an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via the Internet.

Url = Uniform Resource locators
the address of a World Wide Web page. "type a URL into a browser's address bar "synonyms: address, IP address, link, alias

IP address = a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.

Html = web based (cloud) Hypertext Markup Language, a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages.

Http = Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, and instead of acting as its own application layer protocol, it uses separate protocols called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security).

Definitions:
Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), both frequently referred to as "SSL", are cryptographic protocols that provide communications security over a computer network.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This link ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and integral.
