The Boomers Adventures in Technology

Boomer's Learning to maneuver through using current technology

An IT specialist was asked by our church, Cathedral of Faith COGIC, to serve as a computer training instructor for a volunteer program at a senior citizen’s residence home in the mid-city as a part of the Women's Mission Auxiliary Group. This would be an outreach sponsored by that group as an extension of their community program. I serve as her assistant and together we are helping other mature adults to become familiar with using computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Session IX-We Are Growing!! Using MS Word Documents

We are attracting more students. Our number has increased to six regular ladies.  The men pass by to talk but feel they know everything about computers and don’t need a class.  We have outgrown our current classroom and its facilities so the new computers and a larger space for class is solely needed. Another issue is the lack of up-to-date virus definitions and virus protection. For the last two sessions we have had to trouble shoot problems with the in-house computers before we can even begin class.
The residents are free to use the computers for personal use and often they jam up the computers to the point we have no internet access. Talked with the Manager of the Residence Housing to see if we would have a better site for class soon, especially after we get more laptops. She informed us that there was a larger space that we could use located across from our current site.  More room to spread out and set up the laptops and it could accommodate up to 10-15 students.
The next two sessions are dedicated understanding and using Microsoft Word Documents. Activities were done to familiarize the class with the Word Document Ribbon and what items are found there. Several fun activities where done to help students understand what is found along the ribbon and how each item is used. They were ready to start making signs and flier since they are a socially active group.  Sign making really excited them. We started making signs for future events including adding fancy borders.
