The Boomers Adventures in Technology

Boomer's Learning to maneuver through using current technology

An IT specialist was asked by our church, Cathedral of Faith COGIC, to serve as a computer training instructor for a volunteer program at a senior citizen’s residence home in the mid-city as a part of the Women's Mission Auxiliary Group. This would be an outreach sponsored by that group as an extension of their community program. I serve as her assistant and together we are helping other mature adults to become familiar with using computers, tablets, and smart phones.

Session III - Outgrowing our space...

Three more students showed up and two of them had laptops.  Their families had purchased the devices so that they could stay connected, but they had no idea how to use them effectively. Everyone was excited and eager to learn. The class session went very well.  But because we had three additional students our task was to bring them up to the information we had shared with the other students in the previous session.
They were so excited about simple skills that they were learning and the proper terminology for operations and parts of the computer. We did notice that several had a little trouble with manual dexterity when it came to mouse use and operation. The instructor felt that would improve as they are using the computers more and more.
We now have five active class members, which already has presented a problem. Arrangements will have to be made to accommodate more residents and supply them and all of our current students with laptops.
